Biographies are becoming a staple on the reading menu of Nigerians.

And while biographies and memoirs of /about colourful, powerful and globally influential, characters are the books of choice for those with interest in the joy of reading, the life stories of Nigeria’s eminent personalities are beginning to command attention.

At the Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF) on Saturday, November 20, 2021, three biographers and two memoirists will discuss how they choose their topics of interest and what lessons they have learned from their practice.

In Why I Wrote His Story, Dotun Adekambi, Peju Akande, Toni Kan and Kunle Kasumu will speak on the practice of writing extensive portraits of people.

In Why I Wrote My Story Benson Idonije and Murtala Sule will discuss their own memoirs.

“The more truthful biographies there are on a society’s people of influence, the easier it is for historians, sociologists, journalists, to construct narratives that examine what was, and what should be”, says Jahman Anikulapo, programme chair of the Committee for Relevant Art, organisers of LABAF

“That is why we have included a session on Biographies and Memoirs, to feature biographers, who themselves are now a growing force within the writing fraternity”, Anikulapo says.

“We think that a healthy biography market encourages the keeping of archival material, says. “That can only help in robust examination of the society we live in”.
