Xala at The Park: The tone for this second weekend of June is set by the screening of Ousmane Sembene’s Xala, at the Freedom Park, Lagos City’s top cultural watering hole, from 5pm Friday, June 8, 2018. Live band performance by La Femi’s Afrikanna band takes place from 7pm after the screening.
2 Choirs present at the Agip Recital Hall, Muson Centre in Onikan, just down the road from the Xala screening at Freedom Park. The event starts 6.30pm Friday June 8, 2018. The Muson Centre Choir is conducted by Sir Emeka Nwokedi while the Kings College London Alumni is conducted by Joseph Fort

Sembene! If you miss watching Xala, the 43 year old, canon-building comedy film, which is an adaptation of a 45 year old novel of the same name, you may be compensated by watching Sembene! the 2015 documentary film focusing on the life of Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène, who is considered to be the father of African cinema at the same venue, Saturday, June 9, at 5pm.

GBAM! at the Wheatbaker Hotel: Sandra Obiago’s SMO Gallery opens the exhibition of the work of Daniel Obasi, Kadara Enyeasi, Kola Oshalusi, Lex Ash, Noma Osula and Ola Ebiti, six photographers it describes as “avant-garde fashion photographers  from Nigeria”, from 2pm on Saturday, June 9, 2018. The show is named GBAM!, a word that is a loud rendering of the expression “Yes”. Through these photos, the artists express “their vision of perfection as it relates to our culture, our history, our sense of justice and equality, our identity and tradition vis-à-vis new concepts of power”, says SMO, who cu-curates this show with A White Space Creative Agency.

Beyond Functions II, an exhibition of poetry and ceramics by Djakou Kassi Nathalie (Cameroon) and Ato Arinze (Nigeria) opens 3pm on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Quintessence Gallery, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi

Silk Road Classical Concert, featuring Jo Oparamanuike, Saida Zulfugarova, Teuta Nicolet-dit-Felix, happens at the Muson Center, from 6pm on Saturday, June 9, 2018
