Meriem Berrada, Art Director at the Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Morocco, will be sparring with Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz Musem of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in South Africa. 

The conversation, titled Head to Head, will take place Tuesday 28 April at 6PM GMT / 2PM EDT.

The two directors will address the urgencies, challenges, and opportunities impacting young contemporary art organisations on the African continent.

Situated in Marrakech, Morocco, MACAAL is an independent, not-for-profit contemporary art museum.  Since its relaunch in 2018, it has been dedicated to the promotion of African art through its diverse exhibition and education programmes, cultivating the interest of a wide audience base.
Located at the opposite end of the continent having opened a year before MACAAL,

Zeitz MOCAA is a public not-for-profit contemporary art museum which collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits contemporary art from Africa.

BERRADA has been head of cultural projects for Foundation Alliances since 2012 and it was on that platform that she developed MACAAL, as a project

With a degree in cultural and artistic activities management (INSEEC Paris), Meriem Berrada initially worked at MnA communication Paris, a cultural communication agency servicing clients from the worlds of fashion, antiquity, and contemporary art, before joining the team of Marrakech Art Fair, the first contemporary art fair in Morocco. After moving to an auction house as a contemporary art director with the CMOOA (Compagnie Marocaine des Œuvres et Objets d’Art), she joined Fondation Alliances in 2012, at the time of repositioning for the organization.

In 2013, she created La Chambre Claire and in 2014, the Passerelles programme, a cross-sponsorship initiative that coordinates the cultural and social poles of Foundation Alliances through workshops designed to raise awareness of contemporary creation in peripheral urban areas.

In 2016, she developed the project of the Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech.

Koyo Kouoh

KOUOH is a Cameroonian-born, independent exhibition maker and cultural producer, educated in banking administration and cultural management in Switzerland and France. She is the founder and artistic director of Raw Material Company, a centre for art, knowledge and society.

Kouoh has served as an agent to Carolyn Christov-Barkagiev for Documenta 13. She was the coordinator of cultural programmes at the Gorée Institute from 1998 to 2002, collaborated with the Dakar Biennale of Art from 2000 to 2004 and co-curated Les Rencontres de la Photographie Africaine in Bamako in 2001 and 2003. Specializing in photography, video, and art in the public space, she has curated numerous exhibitions in Brazil, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, the United States and Scandinavia, and has written on contemporary African art. Kouoh also served as curatorial advisor to the artistic director for Documenta 12 and curated Philip Aguirre’s project Gaal Gui for the Beaufort Triennale 03.
