Amnesty International has reported that the ECOWAS Court found that the suspension of Twitter by the Nigerian authorities was unlawful.
“The Court ordered Nigeria to bear the full cost of the litigation”, Amnesty says in a statement, which begins with the phrase: “after a series of postponements”.
The Court held that the arbitrary and oppressive ‘Twitter ban’ was a violation of Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Human Rights organization explains in a statement signed by Osai Ojigho, Director, Amnesty International Nigeria.
“The Court have ordered Nigeria to lift the suspension and to ensure it aligns its policies with international human rights treaties.
Amnesty thanks “everyone that has used their voice to speak out for freedom of expression in our country”, adding that the verdict “shows the impact we can make when we work together.is This is a major step in the right direction for freedom of expression and a free media in Nigeria”.
“The Nigerian authorities must now take further steps to remove all barriers, repressive laws and policies that limit fundamental freedoms and free media in Nigeria”, Amnesty concludes.
