Harry Garuba Book Launch & Birthday Reading

Virtual Poetry Network invites all to Harry Garuba Book Launch and Posthumous Birthday Readings. The event is the presentation of a book of essays and poetry in honour of Harry Garuba (1958-2020).

Chants, Dreams and Other Grammars of Love (published by Kraftbooks, Ibadan) is scheduled to be released on April 8, 2022 coinciding with Garuba’s posthumous birthday. The topic of the scheduled virtual meeting. HARRY GARUBA BOOK LAUNCH @BIRTHDAY READING Time: Apr 8, 2022 04:30 PM West Central Africa

Although Garuba was a professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa with a joint appointment in the English Department and the Centre for African Studies at the time of his death, he had made remarkable impact in the Nigerian literary scene in the 15 years he taught at the storied University of Ibadan, prior to his emigration to S.A. He was particularly influential among the “Third Generation” of post-colonial Nigerian English language writers, largely because he was a mentor-friend to those who became the most accomplished among them and also because he edited the first critically acclaimed anthology of poems by members of that generation. Garuba was described by Antje Krog, a notable  South African writer, as the leading black African literary critic in that country. He was a member of the Heinemann African Writers Series editorial advisory board.
