Lagos in Fiction

Dear Reader,

Dreams come true in Lagos.

Or so it is believed by the people who migrate here daily from other parts of Nigeria. People like Chike, Yemi, Isoken and Oma, characters in Welcome to Lagos by Chibundu Onuzo.

Chibundu describes Lagos as a jungle, an orderly ecosystem with a ranked food chain, where winners and losers are decided before they were born.

Welcome to Lagos tells the story of five strangers whose paths cross as they escaped to Lagos from their lives in the Niger Delta. As Chibundu describes the way these strangers connect and look out for each other, and as these people navigate dangerous situations, we see the level of wealth, poverty, greed, selfishness and corruption that make Lagos such an alluring city.

Welcome to Lagos is published in Nigeria by Narrative Landscape Press.

Lagos in Poetry: The Weeping Goddess

The Weeping Goddess is a collection of poems by Aye-Ola Mabiaku, published by Narrative Landscape Press in March 2022.

The collection of poems is easy to read and relatable as it highlights themes like love, pain, mental health and pollution.

Below is an excerpt from the collection, a poem titled “Lagos”:

Lagos on my mind
A scene of calm within the chaos
A home far from home
Where hustlers trail new horizons

Home of hospitable hardship
Land of unequal opportunities

I have seen you in  my visions
As the place where I shall thrive
In love I hate you, yet in want I must endure  you
For this is the place where I shall shine
