TALK

Language as Material

By re-interpreting the scripts and symbols of three ancient African peoples, the organisers attempt to reinterpret the original code using the medium of textile and fibre printing, in addition to digital printing and making.

“Language as Material” will be a showcase and exploration of African language systems – the original conception of the digital- interpreted through traditional fabric dyeing processes, objects and photography. The project brought together fashion designer Bubu Ogisi and Multidisciplinary artist Yadichinma Ukoha-Kalu, who worked together under the theme of “Play As Creation” to bring to the audience an educative and interactive experience using African Language systems. The pair researched ancient language systems and settled on three, Nsibidi, Adrinka and Bantu and further developed patterns that were then replicated on fabric, such as; Cotton, Linen, and Silk.
