AFRIMA 2021: Still We Sing

The 2021 edition of the Africa Music Awards will hold at Eko Hotel. The annual festival which is spearheaded by a diverse group of professionals and music stakeholders will be hosted by Pearl Thusi and Eddie Kadi. The event opened on Friday with a business summit tagged ‘Monetizing Music in Africa.’

Celebrating the Memory of JP Clark with Jazz N’ Poetry at Freedom Park Food Court

As part of events celebrating the memory of J.P. Clark, the Lagos Book and Art Festival will be hosting the Freedom Five, a live band, AJ House of Poetry, Bariga Poetry Collective and LOUDThotz. The event will be chaired by Professor Femi Osofisan, poet, dramatist, author and JP Clark biographer. The JP Clark Family are special guests of honour. Event will be followed by the staging of The Movement, a play by Jude Idada.

Saturday at LABAF: Mentorship, Colloquium and Arthouse Conversation.

Joke Silva, actress and female empowerment activist will hold a mentorship session, titled: The Book in My Life,  for students, aged between 11 and 16, at the Food Court of Kongi’s Harvest in Freedom Park. The interaction is part of the sixth day of the ongoing Lagos Book & Art Festival (LABAF) She would be talking about the importance of education through the arts. The  session would be followed by a colloquium: A Fork In The Road, What Choices For Nigeria with a keynote by Kunle Ajibade, veteran journalist. There will be readings around Ayisha Osori’s Love does not win Elections, Sefi Atta’s The Bead Collector and Eric Ngale’s I, Eric Ngale.

At 4.30pm the same day, LABAF features the Biography Session Theme 1: Why I Wrote His Story Biographies by Other People Ø The Will To Win: The Story of Biodun Shobanjo, by Dotun Adekambi Ø A Safe Pair of Hands: Biography of Austin Avuru, by Peju Akande & Toni Kan Guests of Honour: Chief Biodun Sobanjo | Mr Austin Avuru

Sunday at LABAF

The last day of the Lagos Book and Art Festival would begin with a Youth Assembly where the #EndSARS protest would be dissected. There will also be readings around Professor Wole Soyinka’s latest novel, Chronicles of the Happiest People on Earth, Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia’s Son of the House and Chibundu Onuzo’s Welcome to Lagos. CORA’s flagship Art Stampede will come up at 6pm and the festival would be rounded up with a concert at 8pm.

Minna Davies’ Baby Shower continues this weekend on the lawns of TerraKulture  (outdoors), on Victoria Island. Its part of TerraKulture’s new programme; a repackaged Theatre @ Terra.

Directed by Austine Onuoha and produced by @nevana_productions, Baby Shower is starring Uche Elumelu, Tosin Adeyemi,Jessica Orishane, Motunde Sogunle, Ihuoma Daniel, Joy Nmezi.

Lagos Fringe Festival: Archiving the Future

An open access multidisciplinary arts festival committed to providing a platform for new voices in the Nigerian creative industry.

Language as Material

By re-interpreting the scripts and symbols of three ancient African peoples, the organisers attempt to reinterpret the original code using the medium of textile and fibre printing, in addition to digital printing and making.

“Language as Material” will be a showcase and exploration of African language systems – the original conception of the digital- interpreted through traditional fabric dyeing processes, objects and photography. The project brought together fashion designer Bubu Ogisi and Multidisciplinary artist Yadichinma Ukoha-Kalu, who worked together under the theme of “Play As Creation” to bring to the audience an educative and interactive experience using African Language systems. The pair researched ancient language systems and settled on three, Nsibidi, Adrinka and Bantu and further developed patterns that were then replicated on fabric, such as; Cotton, Linen, and Silk.

Art Exhibition: Miniature Art Fair

The Miniature Art Fair in Lagos is a free annual art event that brings together established and new artists with an offering of miniatures that are also uniquely accessible to both the mature and the new collector. The miniatures are affordable but no less exquisite, nor less delightful, for it.

‘Cream Body’ by Joshua Alabi

Monochrome is an Art Exhibition of Index, a Contemporary Abstract Art Masterpiece created by Yerins Abraham. This artwork “INDEX” interacts with its viewers in the most personal and unique way. The artwork contains a compilation drawing of subjects and ideas all while telling a story in general, with the intent to help its viewers find where these stories exist in their lives and analyze them based on their understanding.

Spoken Word: Poetry as Therapy

The Spoken Word performance hosts some of Lagos’ leading spoken word artists. They include Hauwa, Tobi Abiodun, IB, Kemistree, Prestige, Abena, 78 Psalmist and Paul Word.

Art Exhibition: Home is Here and There

Drawing from glimmering careers in art spanning years, Bamidele George Agbezin, Nathalie Djakou Kassi, and Ben Osondu Onuorah look to explore migration within Africa and how this affects our choice of where we call home. The exhibition examines how Africans move within the continent; from one country to another, within the same country, from rural to urban areas.

Art Exhibition: Ìfihàn by Pelumi Ponmile

Contemporary Artist, Pelumi Ponmile will be exhibiting some of his works at the Department of Fine Applied Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife as part of his Master of Fine and Applied Arts degree requirement. The exhibition, curated by Ayodele Ibiyemi will feature paintings, drawings and collage works.
