Dear Friends,

We are delighted to be making our debut in Asia with the exhibition – From Lagos to Seoul, opening at VODA gallery, Seoul, Korea from August 25th to coincide with Frieze Seoul. The exhibition will feature works of Marcellina Akpojotor, Tonia Nneji, Ameh Egwuh, Ayobami Ogungbe and David Otaru.

Marcellina Akpojotor’s richly textured work captures the unyielding strength, complexities, and seemingly effortless style of her subjects while also referencing the long, arduous journey to female empowerment and gender equality, especially in contemporary African societies.

Tonia Nneji’s bold colours and intricate patterns explore the relationship between trauma and the female body, also investigating the nature of commemorative fabrics and the ways they represent and transcend notions of place and belonging.

Ameh Egwuh’s expressionistic painting techniques and geometric patterns invite the viewer into expansive, multi-layered worlds from the familiar to the surreal, presenting us with intimate casual scenes of play and rest as well as fantasy images of transcendence.

Ayobami Ogungbe explores the intricate techniques of weaving and layering to produce dynamic compositions that reference design aesthetics and are intimately rooted in the storied realities of his community.

David Otaru incorporates the use of metaphors and familiar imagery in telling multi-layered stories of everyday life, socio-economic conditions, and societal structures. Exploring the use of the negative image in his work, the artist considers the growing relationship between art and technology in contemporary society.

From Lagos to Seoul opens on August 25, 2022 at VODA gallery| 38 Apgujeoung-ro 80-gil, Gangnamgu, Seoul, Korea.
