Rediscovered Vintage Prints from a South African in Exile

18 JUNE – 24 JULY 2026
Goodman Gallery New York

Goodman Gallery New York is pleased to present a remarkable group of rare vintage prints by the late South African photographer Ernest Cole, which resurfaced after more than four decades. Together, these works offer an extraordinary new perspective on Cole’s years documenting Black life in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“You try to make peace with exile – its cruel crutches; the exhausting regrets for things left behind – bodies and souls. The experiences, feelings, senses, odors disappear, with the ever-growing certainty that you will never get back to your roots.”

– Raoul Peck, An Idea of Exile.
