Niyi Osundare, Nigeria’s Poet Laureate, will be reading poems from his latest collection at Roving Heights Bookstore in the Landmark Centre in Oniru, Victoria Island.

The February 20, 2022 event is the first of several readings planned for Green: Sighs of Our Ailing Planet, a collection which speaks to the key challenge of climate change, just released by b Black Widow Press.

The event runs from 4pm on Sunday afternoon, February 20, 2022.

“This is the first event in our Book Trek programme for 2022”, says Jahman Anikulapo, Programme Chair of the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA). “It is an initiative through which we promote Book Readings as a valid staple of the culture calendar, the way we have Art Exhibitions, Comedy Concerts, Drama Performances. Live Football Matches, Drinking Bars. Foodstalls, even Bank Branches..”

Concurs Dotun Eyinade, co-founder of Roving Heights Bookstore, which is the host of the event  and supporter of the reading: “We are excited to have an author of the stature of Professor Niyi Osundare coming to read at Roving Heights.”

Eyinade dismisses the Surulere branch of the Bookstore as inadequate for a second reading in Lagos, but he is keen on having Osundare in Abuja. “We can host him at the Orisun Gallery, where we hosted Professor Wole Soyinka last year”, he explains. Discussions around the possibility of and the logistics for the Abuja reading are ongoing between CORA, Roving Heights and Osundare himself. “If it happens it will mark the return of CORA to curating events in Abuja, after seven years”, Anikulapo says.
