Art Basel Hong Kong 2020 has been cancelled, not because of the drawn-out pro-democracy protests in the city, but due to the severe outbreak and spread of the new coronavirus.
The event was scheduled for the third week of next month.
“All visitors who have purchased tickets via HK Ticketing can apply for full refund subject to HK Ticketing”, the organizers say in a release. “Refund Arrangement to be announced on hkticketing.com. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for further assistance”.
Art Basel Hong Kong is the youngest of the three versions of Art Basel, a four decade plus old art fair, organized in three cities on three continents around the world every year.
Art Basel was founded in the 1970s in Basel, the scenic, art friendly, waterfront city in Switzerland by three of the city’s gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Brukner and Balz Hilt. It was an instant success; pulling in more than 16,000 visitors to the inaugural show, which featured 90 galleries and 30 publishers from 10 countries.
In the 2000s, the first Art Basel Miami Beach, in the United States, opened, again to a throng of galleries and visitors. Art Basel Hong Kong was started in the 2010s; and since its beginnings, at least half of the galleries showing are Asian galleries.
The Coronavirus, which has recently been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization, has spread to several countries in the region.
“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected around the world”, We remain committed to Hong Kong and look forward to welcoming you to the next edition of Art Basel Hong Kong on March 25-27, 2021”, the organisers say.
Art Basel Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach will still go ahead in June 2020 and December 2020 respectively.
